NICOLE DUNCAN

Freelance Journalist

Nicole Duncan is a writer, editor, and communications consultant based in Durham, N.C. She grew up in South Carolina and was one of the few Triangle area transplants to relocate from farther south. She graduated with a degree in journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2008 and has since worked in the media, nonprofit, and education sectors.

For nearly a decade, she reported on the restaurant industry for the monthly trade magazines, QSR and FSR. During her tenure as head editor, FSR earned consecutive awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors and also expanded its coverage to include under-the-radar innovators and more diverse voices within food service. Prior to FSR, Nicole worked at an NSF-funded science center operated out of Duke University, where she published a quarterly newsletter, provided editorial guidance to resident scientists, and issued press releases promoting the center’s research. She also wrote for Washingtonian magazine and LivingSocial in D.C., and taught English in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Nicole is also an avid runner, reader, and sci-fi nerd. She’s thrilled to put her communications skills to work at Together We Stand. Through the organization, she's sharing stories of individuals who are striving to build connections among people of all backgrounds, hold conversations around difficult topics like systemic inequity and racism, and bring about positive change to their communities and beyond.
